Clearly stated in this verse is one of the principle ways of knowing our own hearts. As the reflection of the face can be seen in a glass of water, there are also mirrors that reflect the heart of man by which one can discover what is within their own heart. We read in scripture, For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: (James 1:23). A person may behold his heart, that is, himself in the glass of the divine word and law.
The Word of God is ever overflowing of such discoveries, no matter how long we have been reading or studying it. His word can always reveal to us the hidden things in the heart. Better it is to discover for ourselves what is in our heart, than, to have God or even others do it for us. It is better to see where we fall short as we look into the mirror of the Word of God as we read, study and meditate on His Word and his laws.
There is no hardship to anyone who beholds his natural face in a glass of the divine law. In the mirrored reflection of the Word of God, it will help us to know what is in our heart, and will readily be available for reception to all who want to know what is in his/her own heart.
