We are highly dependent on Jesus Christ, not only as the vine for his support, for life, but for much more, as the branch on the root, is dependent for its sap. Apart from Christ, we can not accomplish any thing of permanent physical, emotional or spiritual value. To be fruitful and produce valuable fruit, such as; love one for another, caring one another's burden's, forgiving one another, we must be that dwelling place for Christ to take up resident and we must abide in him, we must keep our union with him by faith, and do all we do in faith by the virtue of that union.
Essentially, our dependency must be in Christ Jesus, commune with him, to adhere to him, and to derive all we may need from him to witness for him. Those that come to him must abide in him: abide in me, by faith; and I in you, by my Spirit. Our communion with Christ and we as believers, never fails on his part. His promise is incredible: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. We must be in his Word by a regard to it, and it in us as a light to our feet.
Jesus clarify in this verse that without me ye can do nothing. Separated from or apart from Jesus we really can not do anything. for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring, (Acts 17:28). It is necessary to abide in him to be fruitful in doing much good works. It is useful and comfortable, and all that answers the end of life. It is vitally important to our doing anything good at all.
We are dependent on God for all the actions of the natural life, and spiritual life; to both, it is in the divine power, that we exist. Without Jesus Christ we can do nothing right; and, that is, nothing that will have fruit pleasing to God or profitable to ourselves: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; (2 Corin. 3:5).
