Psalm 121:1-2 KJV

Psalm 121:1-2 KJV

Some call this song the song "for the road" or some call it the soldier's psalm and structured as an affirmation that help is only from God. It was a song that set the stage for the journey of the Israelites to the Holy City, Jerusalem.  While living in a hostile environment even against their faith, the people of Israel would sing this song to prepare the stage for believers to make their pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where they would be among the people of God.  Meshech and Kedar are examples of the pagan peoples among whom the psalmist had to live.  Therefore, in Jerusalem the children of Israel would hear the words of truth, and in the temple they could pray for the peace of God.

The words I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills pictures a traveler approaching the city of Jerusalem and upon arrival, on first sight of the city walls and the temple, the psalmist would ask, where is help to be found.  The answer would be the strong affirmation:  Help comes from the Lord.  Then again also, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, (probably meant the hills on which the temple was built, Mount Moriah, and the holy hill of Zion, where the ark of the covenant, the oracle, and the altars were).

We do not depend upon the powers of the earth, upon the strength of the hills, upon princes and great men, who, like hills, fill the earth, but our confidence is in God only.  All of our help is laid up in Him, in his power and goodness, in his providence and grace; and from him we must know he is able to provide all that we need.   Scripture tells us, But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)We must look beyond instruments and look unto God who made heaven and earth and all that is within it.
